Course Goals and Objectives

 

Course Description:          An individualized program to strengthen the students’ basic writing skills in grammar, usage, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, sentence and paragraph development.  The course is designed to prepare the student for successful completion of required English courses and to develop confidence and competence in written communication.

 

Course Goals:         Upon successful completion in this course:

I.          The student will have strengthened use of the basic elements of the language necessary for effective written communication

             Exit competencies designed to meet this goal:

A.        Given individual exercises, practice, and teacher assistance throughout the course to improve fundamental skills in grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling, the student will complete a final examination with a passing score.

1.         After instruction on basic sentence elements, the student will identify and avoid fused sentences, sentence fragments, problems in subject-verb agreement and pronoun agreement.

2.         After instruction in and study of correct punctuation, the student will use the comma, colon, semicolon, period, quotation marks, and apostrophe correctly.

3.         The student will demonstrate spelling competence on writing assignments and tests.

4.         After instruction in capitalization, the student will use capital letters correctly.

B.         The student will demonstrate competency in basic written communication by writing unified, coherent paragraphs.

             II.         The student will be prepared for completion of required English courses.

                        Exit competencies designed to meet this goal:

A.        Given exercises and practice, the student will demonstrate organizational skills needed for expository paragraph writing.

B.         After study, the student will write appropriate sentences and expository paragraphs satisfactorily.

C.        The student will demonstrate readiness for work in required English courses by completing at least five paragraphs in class.

            1.         The student will restrict topics and plan paragraphs.

2.         The student will write acceptable paragraphs.  On the final paragraph the criterion for evaluation will be a passing grade which is equivalent to a score of 6 or better based on a holistic scale of 2-12.  A student must also pass the statewide objective test with a score of 70 percent.

 III.       Using a text designed to strengthen individual writing, the student will successfully complete all assigned work so that he/she has the minimum competencies essential for entry into the required English courses, as measured by a final examination consisting of an objective test and a satisfactory paragraph.
