1. Describe the general functions of the respiratory system.
2. Distinguish between the structures of the conducting, regulating and respiratory
zones. Trace the flow of air through all structures.
3. Identify the structural modifications seen within the respiratory system,
including: changes in cartilage; epithelium changes; changes in smooth muscle.
4. Describe the gross anatomical structures of the nasal cavity (including paranasal
sinuses), pharynx, larynx, trachea and bronchii.
5 . Identify the bronchioles and alveoli, and discuss their functions.
6 . Identify the parietal pleura, visceral pleura, and the pleural cavity and
lung.
7 . Discuss the structures involved in inspiration and expiration.
Recognize the following strutures
| nasal cavity | pharynx | larynx ( and associated structures) | trachea |
| bronchus | bronchiole | alveoli | paranasal sinuses |
| hyaline cartilage | smooth muscle | ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium with goblet cells | diaphragm |
| pleural parietal membrane | pleural visceral membrane | lung | pleural cavity |
