• Compare and contrast the anatomical and physiological characteristics of the three basic types of muscle tissue.
• List three important functions of muscle tissue.
• Describe the gross structure of a skeletal muscle with respect to location giving the names of its connective tissue coverings. Determine functions.
• Describe the structure and functional roles of the sarcolemma, sarcomere,myosin and actin filaments, sarcoplasmic reticulum, and T tubules of skeletal muscle cells.
• Understand the molecular level of muscle contraction cycles, including troponin/tropomyosin, myosin, actin, Ca++ and ATP.
• Explain how muscle fibers are stimulated to contract. Explain the sequence of events during a single skeletal muscle contraction, including neurotransmission.
• Define muscle twitch, tetany, fatique and oxygen debt. Relate them to the normal functioning of of a motor unit's contraction.
• Explain how smooth and variable force (graded) contractions of an entire skeletal muscle are produced.
• Describe the mechanisms in which ATP is regenerated during skeletal muscle contraction.
