AUTONOMIC SYSTEM OBJECTIVES

Be able to apply the following terms.

• Compare the somatic and autonomic nervous systems relative to effectors, efferent pathways, and neurotransmitters released. Give examples of effectors used in each system. Identify dominant neurotransmitter in each system.
• Compare and contrast the general functions of the para-sympathetic and sympathetic divisions. Describe dominant neurotransmitter, anatomy of motor pathway, location of spinal nerves for each division.
• Be able to give specific actions of selected organs when stimulated by either division.
• Define cholinergic and adrenergic neurons, list where they would be found, and their general functions.
• Desribe entire suite of effector cell actions, when stimulated by the sympathetic division during Fight or Flight situation.
