CELL OBJECTIVES
Be able to apply the following terms.

• Describe the chemical composition of the plasma membrane. Note three major components and their functions.
• Relate the five major roles that membrane proteins perform.
• Discuss active and passive transport mechanisms performed by the membrane. Differentiate clearly between these transport processes relative to driving force. Identify which substances (water, ions, gases, glucose, polysaccarides, polypeptides, lipids, bacteria, secreted proteins like hormones and enzymes) are transported by each mechanism.
• Explain how the imbalance of ionic concentrations (across the cell membrane) is maintained.
• Discuss the structure and function of nucleus, mitochondria, ribosomes, the smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum, and the Golgi complex; note functional interrelationships among these organelles.
• Describe the function of the cytosol and transport vesicles.
• Name and describe the structure and function of cyto-skeletal elements including mitotic spindles, cilia and flagella.
• List the phases of the cell life cycle and describe the major events of each phase.
• Describe the locations of DNA, RNA and polypeptide production. Describe the processes of protein production.
• Describe the locations and processes of protein synthesis and describe the roles of DNA, RNA and polypeptides. Follow this sequence until the protein is transported throughout the cell or out of the cell.
