SKELETAL SYSTEM HISTOLOGY AND PHYSIOLOGY OBJECTIVES

Be able to apply the following terms.

• List and describe five important functions of the skeletal system.
• List the tissues that make up the skeletal system and identify their locations. Specifically, describe bone histology and cartilage histology.
• Relate the process of bone matrix formation. Discuss the chemical composition of bone matrix and the functions of its cellular and non-cellular components.
• Compare and contrast the classes of bones and provide examples of each class. Distinguish clearly between the several types of bone marking and note their relative functions.
• Describe the gross anatomy and functions of structures of a generic bone. Include marrow, spongy and compact bone tissue, and the periosteum.
• Describe the gross anatomy and functions of structures of a long bone. Include red and yellow marrow, epiphysis, diaphysis, spongy and compact bone tissue, articular cartilage and periosteum.
• Compare and contrast the two processes of bone formation: intramembranous and endochondral ossification. Identify location.
• Describe the process of bone growth that occurs at the epiphyseal plates and periosteum.
• Compare the locations and functions of the osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and osteocytes in bone remodeling.
• Demonstrate how hormones regulate blood calcium levels (PTH, CT and Calcitriol).Use this hormonal negative feedback loop template.
• Identify how human growth hormone affects bone remodeling and growth. Include discussion of disorders.
