Literary Awards: Caldecott Medal: honors the best children's picture book of the year. (Award winners, 1938-present) Commonwealth Writers' Prize: awards and encourages literary talent in the British Commonwealth. (Award winners, 1987-present) EMMA Awards: awards are intended to honor humanitarian media excellence. Awards are given in several categories: music, film, television, art and entertainment, journalism, public figures, lifetime achievement, the Legend Award and the Special Award. (Award winners, 1997-present) Man Booker International Prize: recognises one writer for their achievement in fiction. (Chinua Achebe is 2007's winner) National Book Award: annually recognizes books in five categories: fiction, general nonfiction, biography/autobiography, poetry and criticism. National Book Critics Circle Award: a non-profit organization consisting of nearly 700 active book reviewers who are interested in honoring quality writing. (Award winners, 1975- present) Newberry Medal: honors the author making the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. (Award winners, 1922-present) Nobel Prize in Literature: The Nobel Foundation recognizes achievement in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, peace and economics. PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction: national prize which honors the best published works of fiction by American citizens in a calendar year.
