A Course Description:
This course includes laboratory analysis of selected current health indicators using appropriate evaluation techniques. Students will determine their current health status and develop a functional program to foster optimal wellness. Within these parameters, students will develop a knowledge and understanding of nutrition and physical fitness as it relates to good health. Individualized nutritional programs will be designed with the use of a current computer software program. 32 contact hours.
B. Major Learning Outcomes:
1. The student will evaluate personal physical
condition (after completing a

2. The student will understand and be able to implement a prescribed fitness program.
3. The student will design a personalized nutrition and weight control program.
4. The student will develop an awareness of some communicable diseases and their preventative measures.

between specific lifestyle behaviors and the leading causes of death and
debilitating disease in the
C. Course Objectives Stated in Performance Terms:
1. The student will evaluate personal physical condition (after completing a pre-exercise medical history form) by:
a. analyzing
cardio-respiratory efficiency using a sub-maximal measurement.
b. measuring blood pressure.
c. determining flexibility based on an active range of motion of various joints of the body.
d. assessing muscular strength and endurance.
e. analyzing body
composition.
2. The student will understand and be able to implement a prescribed fitness program by:
a. demonstrating the
effect of exercise on blood pressure.
b. calculating exercise benefit zone as determined by target heart rate.
c. preparing a personal exercise program based on results of previously described tests including:
(1) aerobic exercises
(2) other specific training exercises, including muscular strength and endurance training and flexibility workouts
(3) maintenance of daily exercise log.
3. The student will design a personalized nutrition and weight control program by:
a. completing a diet analysis.
b. developing a nutritional plan.
c. determining body composition.
d. determining personal basal metabolic rate.
4. The student will develop an awareness of some communicable diseases and their preventative measures by:
a. determining
individual risks for communicable diseases.
b. ascertaining
preventative measures.
c. identifying modes
of transmittal and high risk groups for HIV and AIDS.
5. The student will understand the
relationship between specific lifestyle behaviors and the leading causes of
death and debilitating disease in the
a. assessing
cardiovascular risk.
b. assessing
various cancers risk.
c. identifying
risk factors for osteoporosis.
d. determining
risk for potential back injury.
e. explaining
effects of cigarette smoking and other chemicals on the human body.
D. Criteria Performance Standard:
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
The student will demonstrate to the instructor(s) proficiency in the above stated course objectives. The evaluation methods will include written quizzes and examinations, laboratory projects, attendance/participation, and extra credit bonuses. The minimum level for satisfactory performance is 70%.
The minimum level of satisfactory performance is passing the written exams with satisfactory scores and participating in the class activities, either as an active or passive individual.
