ST. PETERSBURG COLLEGE
APPROVED COURSE OUTLINE
OCE 2001 INTRODUCTION
TO OCEANOGRAPHY ___3__
Prefix Number Course Title Cr.Hrs.
A. Course Description:
Prerequisites: (ENC 0020 and REA 0002 and MAT 0024) or (EAP
1695 and MAT 0024). This course is a study of the ocean and a survey of basic
principles and procedures of physical, biological, chemical and geological
oceanography. 47 contact hours.
B. Major Learning Outcomes:
1. The
student will acquire knowledge of those who contributed to our understanding of
the oceans and its plants and animals.
2. The
student will acquire understanding of the biological communities that live in
the sea.
3. The
student will understand the physical forces that control the tides, currents,
and waves of the oceans.
4. The
student will acquire understanding of the physical and chemical factors
affiliated with sea water and how these factors influence biological and
physical processes of the oceans.
5. The
student will understand the geological processes that continually change the
sea floor and shorelines.
6. The
student will acquire understanding of the basic concepts relating the oceans to
weather and climate.
7. The
student will acquire understanding of human use and misuse of the world's
oceans and the attempts to regulate its use.
C. Course Objectives Stated in Performance
Terms:
1. The
student will acquire knowledge of those who contributed to our understanding of
the oceans and its plants and animals by recognizing certain historical
individuals (and their achievements) who contributed to our understanding of
the oceans and related phenomena.
2. The
student will acquire understanding of the biological communities that live in
the sea by identifying and characterizing, through proper principles of biological
taxonomy, certain animals and plants of the oceans.
3. The
student will understand the physical forces that control the tides, currents,
and waves of the oceans by:
a. identifying and explaining the earth, moon, sun relationships in
the development of the tides on the planet earth.
b. recognizing and explaining certain oceanic and atmospheric
phenomena as they relate to climate and weather on the planet earth.
4. The
student will acquire understanding of the physical and chemical factors affiliated
with sea water and how these factors influence biological and physical
processes of the oceans by:
a. recognizing and explaining the biological and physical
requirements of such as coral reefs and estuaries.
b. identifying certain characteristics and properties of water and
explaining how same influence the physical and biological processes of the sea.
5. The
student will understand the geological processes that continually change the
sea floor and shorelines by:
a. identifying and explaining the geologic
processes that form and continually change the sea floor and shoreline
b. identifying certain geomorphic features related to the preceding.
6. The
student will acquire understanding of the basic concepts relating the oceans to
weather and climate by identifying and explaining the forces that control both
waves and currents in the oceans and the implications of waves and currents to
the oceanic environment.
7. The
student will acquire understanding of human use and misuse of the world's
oceans and the attempts to regulate its use by recognizing and explaining
certain of man’s activities that have an impact on the marine environment.
D. Criteria Performance Standard:
Upon successful completion of the
course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of
each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by
individual course instructors.
