A. Course
Description:
This
is a swimming course designed to teach the techniques of safe skin and SCUBA
diving. Successful completion of this
course qualifies students for nationally recognized certification. Physical examination, liability release and
special equipment fee are required. 64

B. Major
Learning Outcomes:
1. The student will demonstrate an understanding
of the various physical forces experienced as one dives and the physiological
changes these forces cause.
2. The student will demonstrate abilities and
skills in the use of the various pieces of diving equipment.
3. The student will demonstrate an understanding
of the marine environment and the life to be found therein.
C. Course
Objectives Stated in Performance Terms:
1. The student will demonstrate an understanding
of the various physical forces experienced as one dives and the physiological
changes these forces cause by:
a. identifying the
different forms of matter and describe their properties.
b. identifying the
major gas laws and relate them to diving.
c. explaining the
effect of buoyancy on a diver moving from fresh to salt water.
d. identifying the
effects of depth on vision.
e. identifying the
various squeezes the body experiences and explain how to control them/
f. identifying the
cause and symptoms and explain the control and treatment for the various barotrauma.
2. The student will demonstrate abilities and
skills in the use of various pieces of diving equipment by:
a. assembling and
using the mask, fins, snorkel and weight belt.
b. assembling and
adjusting the basic scuba.
c. breathing from the
scuba while carrying out various tasks underwater.
d. making proper use
of the buoyancy compensator.
e. successfully
completing a minimum of three dives in open water.
3. The student will demonstrate an understanding
of the marine environment and the life to be found therein by:
a. explaining the
forces causing the various natural phenomena of currents, tides, waves and
coral reefs.
b. identifying the
common forms of marine life found in local waters.
c. identifying the
various forms of dangerous marine life.
D. Criteria
Performance Standard:
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
