Audition Information

Auditions are required for all students who wish to major in music. Call (727)341-4360 to schedule an audition.

Music Major Auditions will be held in the Humanities Building - SPC St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus on the following dates:
Monday - Friday, December 15-19, 2008.

Co-Motion Dance Theatre Auditions will be held in the Wellness Center, located on the corner of 70th Street North and Burlington Avenue, St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus on Saturday January 17, 2009 at 10:30 am (room 112).

Music Major Audition Requirements:

I. Requirements for music major, Piano principal

  1. Two contrasting pieces, from memory, selected from the categories below. One of the works must be from category 1 or 2.Audition
Categories:
  1. A work by J. S. Bach
  2. One movement of a sonata by Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven
  3. A romantic work
  4. A twentieth-century work
  • All major and minor scales and arpeggios, two octaves, Quarter-note=120.
  • Sight reading.
II. Requirements for music major, Voice principal
The audition will consist of three (3) art songs of contrasting nature, one preferably in Italian.
III. Requirements for music major, Orchestral Instrument principal
  1. A portion of an etude or solo that demonstrates the student's lyrical playing ability; one minute in length.
  2. A portion of an etude or solo that demonstrates the student's technical playing ability; one minute in length.
  3. All major scales and arpeggios; slurred up, tongued down.
  4. Chromatic scale, C-C, two octaves, slurred up, tongued down.
  5. Sight reading.

IV. Requirements for music major, Guitar principal:

A. For acoustic guitar:

  • Major and minor scales up to 2 flats and 2 sharps, at least.
  • A prepared solo from grade 1-3 Guitar foundation of America (GFA).
  • A sight-reading exercise from 1st position up to the 5th fret.

B. For jazz or electric guitar:

  • A prepared solo from standard repertoire.
  • A sight-reading exercise.
  • Major and minor scales and modes.
  • Demonstration of knowledge of the blues and pentatonic forms

C. All prospective music majors in guitar should call one of the guitar faculty for a quick phone interview before auditioning to help them shape their audition material.
