The Jazz Ensemble is a select group of musicians chosen by audition from the St. Petersburg College student body. Both music majors and non-music majors are eligible to perform in the ensemble.
The band (MUN 1710), under the direction of
Dr. David Manson, performs a full range of styles including traditional swing, bebop, fusion, Latin jazz and contemporary jazz. Each year the ensemble plays several concerts both on and off campus.
Improvisation is emphasized for every student taking part in the course. Listening/coaching sessions and lectures by outstanding outstanding jazz and improvisation artists are frequent activities of this program with recent master classes given by Sam Rivers, Mike Lee, Joe McPhee, Davey Williams, Ted Rosenthal, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Kevin Wilder, Rita Wilson, Kym Purling, Joanna Rose, Butch Thomas and Kenny Drew, Jr. |
