Frequently asked questions about GED classes at St. Petersburg College

Q. Where are the classes taught?
A. Classes are taught at five SPC locations: St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus, Seminole Campus, Clearwater campus, SPC Downtown Center and the Tarpon Springs Campus.

Q. What does the GED preparation course cover?
A. In the GED class, students review all five subject areas on the GED test: Writing, Social Studies, Science, Reading and Mathematics.

Q. How much does the course cost?
A. The instruction and the testing given in the GED class are free. The registration fee for the GED test is $70.

Q. When are the classes offered?
A. Hours vary from program to program. See the links below for detailed information.

Q. Who is eligible to take the course?
A. The class is open to anyone, 16 or older, who is not enrolled in a Pinellas County public school.

Q. Are most of the students high school age?
A. Students range in age from 16 to students receiving Social Security.

Q. Does the diploma say "GED"?
A. No. Anyone passing the GED in the state of Florida earns a diploma that says "State of Florida High School Diploma."

Q. Does everyone follow the same instruction and review?
A. No. All students take a two and a half hour preliminary test, to assess the areas in which they need to review.  Instruction and review is personalized, based on specific questions missed on the preliminary test.

Q. What is the first step?
A. The first step toward earning the GED is, for some students, the hardest — simply walking through the door! Sometimes it takes considerable courage to join a GED class. However, the instructors are friendly and experienced, to help make the learning experience as accessible and speedy as possible. Some programs require an appointment for the preliminary test. Q. Is there a graduation ceremony?
A. A formal, cap-and-gown graduation ceremony every August honors the achievements of our students.

Q. Will SPC accept this diploma?
A. Absolutely!
