COLLEGE-LEVEL ACADEMIC SKILLS (CLAS) REQUIREMENTS

The following recommendations relating to College-Level Academic Skills (CLAS) requirements were made by the Articulation Coordinating Committee (ACC) during an August 13, 2009 Conference Call:

Assessments

  1. ACC approved the use of SAT, ACT and ACCUPLACER as examinations that  can be used to meet CLAS requirements (need to ensure appropriate nomenclature for approved exams).

  2. ACC approved cut scores for meeting CLAS requirements (see chart below).

    SAT Math

    500 or above

    SAT Critical Reading

    500 or above

    SAT Writing

    500 or above

    Enhanced ACT Math

     21 or above (21)

    Enhanced ACT Reading

     22 or above (20)

    Enhanced ACT English

     21 or above (20)

    ACCUPLACER Math

     91 or above
    Concordant scores
    SAT 500 = 88-91, ACT 21 = 91-94

    ACCUPLACER Reading Comprehension

     93 or above
    Concordant scores
    SAT 500 = 93, ACT 22 = 92-93

    ACCUPLACER Sentence Skills

     105 or above
    Concordant scores
    SAT 500 = 105-106, ACT 21 = 104-105

  3. General Knowledge Test - not approved for use
    1. Not a nationally standardized exam
    2. Access issue - if students who are not teacher education students take the exam to meet CLAS requirements, it may have a negative impact on the ability of teacher ed students to have access to the exam (limited supply).

Course Options for Meeting the CLAS Communication Skills Requirement

  1. A student must earn a 2.5 GPA in a combination of at least one (1) course with the ENC prefix and any other course that is designated as a "Gordon Rule" writing course  (excluding courses with the SPC prefix).

Course Options for Meeting the CLAS Computation Skills Requirement

  1. A student must earn a 2.5 GPA in any combination of two (2) courses from the list below:
    • Any MAC course with last 3 digits of 102 or higher
    • MGF 1106 - Mathematics for Liberal Arts I
    • MGF 1107 - Mathematics for Liberal Arts II
    • MGF 1113 - Topics in College Mathematics I
    • MGF 1114 - Topics in College Mathematics II
    • MGF X118 - Mathematics for CLAST Review
    • Any MGF course with last 3 digits of 202 or higher
    • Any Gordon Rule Statistics course
    • Any Math course that has College Algebra (MAC 1105) as a prerequisite

Applications of credits earned via Credit-by-Examination

  1. Credit granted in accordance with the ACC Credit-by-Examination Equivalency List (including AP, IB, AICE, CLEP, DSST, and Excelsior) may be substituted for the courses used to meet CLAS skills requirements.

  2. If a student earns credit in two (2) college courses within the same subject area via ACC-approved credit-by-examination, the CLAS requirements in that subject area will be considered "met."

  3. If a student earns credit for one (1) college course via approved ACC credit-by-examination, no grade will be assigned for that course. The 2.5 GPA calculation will be calculated only on the grade earned in the 2nd course (i.e. the grade in the second course must equate to a 2.5 or higher).

FASTER Transcript Codes

  1. For students who receive a "waiver" of CLAS requirements, a code of "999" and a statement indicating that a waiver has been granted will be recorded on the transcript.

  2. For students who meet the CLAS requirements via any of the approved options listed above (i.e. 2.5 GPA in approved courses or score achieved on an approved assessment), a code of "995" will be recorded on the transcript.
